Stress at Work

As a Mindfulness & Meditation Guide, I work with a lot of individuals who are experiencing stress – especially stress at work, and often combined with health issues.
There must be millions of people out there, and you may be one of them, who is struggling through.
With the consequences of the global Covid 19 pandemic, you may be wishing there were better ways to manage stress at work and that there was more support around you.
A Healthy Workplace
Perhaps your workplace needs a little nudge – it’s in everyone’s interests to have a healthy workplace. You might realise that you’re not alone in feeling swamped with stress. Getting together in a group to discover ways to deal with stress might help.
‘Mental health disorders are the most common work-related ill health problem, according to research published in the scientific journal Occupational Medicine. Musculoskeletal disorders, such as back and limb pain, are the second most frequently reported health complaint.’
It’s great to see how some businesses are dealing with this today. I am contributing in a small way to Legal & General’s Red Card Event this year. They say:

Red Cards in sport are normally associated with bad behaviour, but we’re using it to show that it’s not a bad thing to talk about mental health in the workplace. After all, we talk about physical health, so why don’t we talk about mental health?
Learn to Manage Stress Together
I know that many people find support and enjoyment when learning together in a group, as well as gaining profound life-skills. You get to realise that others share the same kind of vulnerabilities.
This doesn’t make you weaker; it’s a form of courage (read Brene Brown’s ‘Rising Strong’ for more on vulnerability and courage.) With the recent pandemic, on-line courses work in the same way.
The Mindfulness Group Courses I run bring together individuals from all walks of life. Parents, Gps, lawyers, nurses, business-owners, the retired and students have all learned to manage stress with mindfulness.

Take Charge to Manage Stress
Perhaps you run your own business from home or with a small group of business colleagues.

Basic mindfulness tip for everyone:
‘First, start off your day right. Researchers have found that we release the most stress hormones within minutes after waking. Why? Because thinking of the day ahead triggers our fight-or-flight instinct and releases cortisol into our blood. Instead, try this: When you wake up, spend two minutes in your bed simply noticing your breath. As thoughts about the day pop into your mind, let them go and return to your breath.’

As human beings, we have the innate capacity to deal with challenges. Our bodies elicit a stress response in order to help us.
Yet somehow, we’ve become cut off from our emotions and how to deal with them effectively.
It’s easy to get swamped and find that we feel stressed all the time. Daily commuter woes, workplace bullying, poor management, project deadlines, demands on your time at work and at home, personal demons. Take your pick!
I know that mindfulness is the key to re-connecting with better stress-management skills. Get together with work colleagues and learn to manage stress at work. It’s one way to arm everyone with effective stress-management tools.
Your Own Personal Growth
The process can lead to a happier and more thriving, productive workplace. If your place of work is behind the times, unwilling to help manage stress at work, then lead the way yourself – join a class or one-to-one course, and with your ability to manage anxiety and stress using mindfulness, you will never look back!
