Mindfulness is about learning to be awake and present for your life. Since we spend 95% of our time on autopilot, here are a few simple mindfulness tips to intercept some of that autopilot. And incorporate easy mindfulness into your day!
1. Choose to start your day rather than letting the day start you!
Begin each morning by noticing the sensations of your breathing for a few breaths, before jumping out of bed.
2. Take some daily activities where you are completely present and undistracted
- While you clean your teeth
- As you sit and eat your breakfast
- While you listen to someone speak
- When you are stopped at a red traffic light
3. Throughout your day, notice your posture
If sitting at a computer or walking between places – straighten your spine, notice the position of your shoulders and focus on 2 or 3 breaths.
Extra tip: be thankful for the healthy parts of your body right now!
4. Give yourself tiny moments of stillness
- While you wait for the kettle to boil
- Just before you enter or leave a room
- While your computer is switching on
- As you queue for your takeaway coffee or the ATM
5. Get grounded
- Become aware of your feet inside your shoes
- Firmly connect to the ground
- Allow some deep breaths up and down your body, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head
6. Look up from time to time
Spot something beautiful, allow your eyes to rest on it; the sky, the curve of a piece of furniture, a sunbeam, an unexpected shadow or the smell of fresh fruit.
And this description is a great mindfulness reminder:
Savour everything you do, every experience. There is no moment that cannot be savoured — even those routine moments, even those times when you’re having a conflict with someone else, even those times when you’re alone with nothing to do.
Savouring is about learning to live presently, to fully enjoy the gift of each moment, to give that moment the space and attention it deserves. It takes practice, but it’s a delicious practice.
