' Little Kay was quite blue with cold ... and his heart was like a lump of ice ... He sat quite still, stiff and cold ...  then burst into tears, and cried till the pieces of glass were washed out of his eyes. 'Dear Gerda, where have you been all this time? and where have I been?'  

This quote is from Hans Christian Anderson's 'The Snow Queen' and I've always loved this story. It describes something for me with a deeper meaning. Waking up from a soul sleep feels exactly the same. I also love another Hans Anderson tale - 'The Little Mermaid' (before it was hijacked by Disney) where the mermaid gives up her voice in order to have love on earth ... hmmmm. Fairy stories have always been powerful metaphors for the human condition.
